A good news for obesity patients as the
FDA finally approved a new drug after 13 years. A Swiss company is the official
manufacturer of the drug and a company named (Asai) is the marketing and
distribution company in the United States. The drug will be available soon in
Saudi Arabia.
The new drug Lorcaserin is used as to reduce chronic weight
gain in adult patients, in addition to reduce calorie diet and physical
activity such as sports particularly among patients with the drug that must be
used with low in calories diet with physical activity through the activation of some serotonin receptors in the
brain. Medication works activate these receptors helps a person to make him
feel fullness after eating small amounts of food. and it has no effect on the
serotonin receptors.
The FDA also stated that they are now testing the safety and
effectiveness of the medication if used with other drugs to reduce weight or
those who suffer from diseases of the heart and blood vessels.
scientific studies have proven that medication with dieting
and sports together was much more effective than diet and exercise alone in
helping obese patients lose weight by 5%.
Also there is some side effects of the medication: headache, dry
mouth, dizziness, fatigue, memory and concentration strikes. As for the most common side effects in diabetes patients are: low
blood sugar, headache, back pain, fatigue.
Now the company is evaluating the safety and efficacy of the
treatment on obese children, and
evaluate the effects of long-term use and the major side
effects such as heart and blood problems.
